[Forum FAQ] NEW tag attached on an application may not disappear after you have used it

In Windows 8.1, we often encounter the issue below:

When a new app is installed, we will see a blue "New" tag attached on the application in the Apps view (On the Start screen, slide up from the middle of the screen to see the Apps view. If youre using a mouse, click the arrow The arrow button near the lower-left corner of the screen). The blue "New" tag means that the application is a new one for user.  In theory, the blue "New" tag will go away when you run that application. For some reason, no matter how many times you run the application, the blue NEW tag is still there.

Solution:

The issue should be caused by the corrupt registry value. We can try the following steps to fix it.

  1. Press Win + Xtype regedit, then press Enter.
  2. Then locate to the following registry key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserAssist\{CEBFF5CD-ACE2-4F4F-9178-9926F41749EA}\Count
There are several registry keys corresponding to each installed app.
  3. Here we just delete Count under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserAssist\{CEBFF5CD-ACE2-4F4F-9178-9926F41749EA}\, log off and log in. Then this key will be recreated.

Important:
This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.
